Following is Sis Queenie Laygo's, the incumbent GLC, report on the recently held biennial convention in Bacolod City.

brods and sisses,

sorry for the delay of my reports.

i believe that the convention was a success and theta had done it again.

why was it a success?

1. sister luvie lumang won, she is now our current VP for sorority affairs

2. we have met several theta brothers and sisters from batch 60s, 70s, 80s and had a fellowship with them

3. the Gob of labay had helped us to have a home in bacolod, the labay batch 60s had helped us to feel at home by literally sharing their homes with us, gave us meals, rides to and fro convention, and gimmicks at night.salamat po.

4. the theta residents had participated in the plenary session for the constitution amendments, thanks to sis marlea for sharing us the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed amendments, nakatulong ito para mas mabilis ang pick- up namin sa discussions

5. thanks to the alumni who had supported us financially for giving us allowance. we still have a savings of more than P10,000.00 that without their help, we would not be there to excel in the first place.

mabuhay tayong lahat.

pictures?? ipapa- scan muna namin.

thank you very much in behalf of the residents..

  • Alumni support the delegates to the Biennial Convention in Bacolod City in May 5/13/2003

The alumni in the Philippines and North America extend financial assistance to support the representatives of Theta Chapter to the Biennial Convention in Bacolod City this month.  The alumni association in North America shoulders part of the expenses of the resident delegates of the fraternity while the alumni in the Philippines take care of the expenses of the resident delegates of the sorority and the alumni delegates including the settlement of  Theta's past due arrears with the National Office.

Sis Luvie Lumang is a candidate for one of the elective offices in the National Council.  We look forward to Sis Luvie's success in the forthcoming election.

  • ...the meeting (of alumni on May 1 in Manila) was a success! 5/2/2003 By Mario Buenaventura
"Offhand, I can say that the meeting was a success.  We had twenty seven (27) warm bodies. The 60's, 70's 80's and 90's were duly represented. Of course Rebirth Batch 74 had the most representation. Apo Theta Foundation was retained as the official name of the alumni association inasmuch as it is recognized by the national council and its annual dues were religiously paid by Sis Luvie Lumang thru all these years. I was designated interim chairman and Sis Marlee heads the interim secretariat with Sis Cora Davis and Luvie as working members. Sis Carmen Paule is in charge of food and refreshments for the delegates to the May 31 General Assembly. The election of regular officers will be done during the May 31/03 Alumni General Assembly in Los Banos.

GC Al Sese and GLC Queenie Laygo were also present. Brods Willy Pasiliao, Orly Roldan, Tony Ho, Jimmy Abella, and Steve Baltazar were able to make it to the meeting. Notably absent were Nards Villegas, Rainer Pantua and Levi Garcia. The President of APO Qatar, Jun Pangapalan graced the occasion upon my invitation. Brod Willy Pasiliao, Tony Ho, Jimmy Abella and myself will compose the alumni voting delegates to the Bacolod Convention.  We raised enough funds to pay for the alumni convention dues plus arrears."

Photos will be published as soon as they become available.

  • 22nd Biennial Convention: Theta's Representation Uncertain 3/20/2003

Sis Luvie Lumang, in her email to the eGroup, brought up issues that put in jeopardy the qualification of Theta Chapter to vote in the upcoming biennial convention.  Her email is quoted, verbatim, as follows:

"The 22nd Biennial Convention is forthcoming and based on the records of the National Council,Theta has past chapter dues to wit:

Past Dues: Sorority - P830; Fraternity- P430; Alumni-P1,500
DY 2001-2003: Sorority-300.00; Frat----- 300; Alumni- 3,000

We have to pay these dues to renew our charter and qualify to become official/voting delegates.  May I invite you guys to attend the convention, especially those based in the Phils. Let us participate in the crafting of the new APO CBL. We hope the APO Members coming from UP MANILA, UP DILIMAN, UP LOS BANOS, UP ILOILO, UP MINDANAO can put up common candidates for the Magic 9. We have to reform our
beloved Alpha Phi Omega."

This is an opportunity for the alumni in the Philippines to get together and address this important issue affecting our Chapter's representation in a national-level forum.

  • Alumnus offers to donate desktop computer to residents 03/18/2003

Below is a quote from Brod Mario Buenaventura in one of his emails to our eGroup:

"I am going to donate my previous cpu, with keyboard and mouse. The alumni can provide the funds for the purchase of a monitor. The cpu is  intel celeron 750 mghz, 20gb hard disk, cd rom drive, floppy disk drive, 56 kbps modem, windows XP Professional edition OS, MS Office 2000, and speakers."

Brod Mario is still looking for a donor of a monitor and will solicit one from Brod Orly Roldan.  He plans to deliver the unit to Brod Steve Baltazar where the resident brothers can claim it.

Brod Mario decided to donate a desktop computer in response to the need to complete an APO-Theta directory of members who are residing in the Philippines.  Further, he suggests that the resident brothers take the assignment of completing this directory.  The computer donation is a huge first step towards the completion of the directory.

  • APO-Theta Alumni Association (N.A.) President Pons Gordovez takes a Leave of Absence 5/6/2002

For personal reasons, Bro Pons Gordovez takes a leave of absence as interim president of the APO-Theta Alumni Association of North America.  He has nominated Bro Jojo Agtane to assume the presidency of the association in his absence.  Bro Jojo is also the incumbent Treasurer and also hails from Northern California.  Bro Jojo should, without qualms, assume unequivocal leadership to avoid an extended interregnum and ensure a smooth transition.  Let us support Bro Jojo in his dedicated effort to continue what Bro Pons has started to organize our Brothers and Sisters in North America.  It is during this fragile period of organizational infancy that we should strongly rally behind our leaders to ensure the success of our fledgling alumni association in the U.S.A. and Canada.

  • ...is the conclusion foregone? 4/19/2002

From the same fellow:

"FYI, it appears that the CBL is becoming the centerpiece of everyone's efforts. I perceive it rather differently although not heretically. Brothers we still are, aren't we? I, however, see the CBL as a deliverable; i.e., a back-end issue as opposed to a requisite proposition. If appropriate steps are taken at the front-end, the CBL will become a foregone conclusion. It still has to be scrutinized to make it operational but its place and relevance to the bigger picture of what the organization is hoping to accomplish will be undoubtedly clear. Real thought: I think we jumped the gun on this one and have not decided what to shoot at. If you think I am talking cryptically, well, I guess I am. Do you realize that forming this organization (all Thetans) is practically recreating the same environment we lived through over a quarter century ago? How is this model any different from existing regional APO chapters? What impact will we have on these regional chapters? What responsibility do we have to them? Are we trying to fulfill some unfinished pubescent business? Nothing bad about that, I guess. If we can be more introspective about our actions we may discover a much deeper understanding of our collective intentions and thus have a clearer sense of purpose and direction for this organization. Consequently, the CBL will just glide through effortlessly under everyone's arms like a greased up pot belly porker in a Sunday rodeo fair and everyone will be all smiles and live happily ever after (I hope)."

  • To review or not to review?  Necessity or futility? 4/18/2002

The CBL of the APO-Theta USA-Canada has already been scheduled for ratification but questions were raised which led to the suggestion that it be reviewed or audited by a group which did not participate in the drafting process.  It is strongly recognized that this is debatable.  Below is an opinion from a member about the CBL process which very well captures the predicament that the alumni brothers and sisters in North America are in.

"I've been following the chatter the last few weeks.  Quite amusing.  CBL appears to be a mere representation of some other underlying systemic issues -- that I believe are of more significant concern.  We may be putting the cart before the horse here if ratification is all we're after.  Acting expediently may not be in the total interest of the organization. I assure you that if we ask critical questions (as you've already started) we will discover the right answers, but not without anguish and perhaps to the consternation of those who have taken admirable efforts to bring the process to where it is now. I am treading very lightly here. What must be understood is that it behooves us to see alternative models taking into account all of the variables (geography, technology, entitlement, relevance, social identity, and more) that may impact our organization now and in the future. It may bring us full circle to where we started, but better to err on the side of diligence."

What do you think?

  • Ratification of APO-Theta USA-Canada's Constitution Scheduled 3/29/2002

The ratification of the recently finalized Constitution and By-Laws of the Alpha Phi Omega Philippines Theta Alumni Association of North America, Inc. is scheduled on July 4-6, 2002 in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S.A.  All brothers and sisters in the USA and Canada are invited to attend.  It could also serve as a great opportunity to see each other like a big reunion.  The official reunion is scheduled to be held during the Labor Day weekend in September in San Diego, California.   Perhaps the official reunion could be held in Las Vegas, instead, so that those who live far from the states of Nevada and California can participate in the ratification process and, at the same time, enjoy a reunion of brothers and sisters.

  • California Brothers and Sisters Draft Theta Alumni Association Constitution and By Laws 3/15/2002

A group of brothers and sisters in California meet in mid-March (15 through 17) in Los Angeles to draft the Alumni Association's Constitution and By Laws (CBL).  One very relevant issue confronting the delegates is defining  the geographic coverage of the Alumni Association considering that we have brothers and sisters in Australia, Japan and Canada who actively subscribe to our group mail and are involved in our transnational service projects.  An association of worldwide membership has also been seen to be timely because of the current inactive status of the Alumni Association in the Philippines, although efforts are underway to revive it.  Resolving this issue alone would be a very great challenge.  Drafting a CBL is not an easy task.  Nevertheless, Bro Jun Flores of Northern California set an impressive goal for the team by aiming for a CBL that can  very well serve as a model for other Alumni Associations to follow.  The drafters have observed that there is a strong trend towards the organization of chapter-oriented alumni associations as opposed to geography-oriented ones.  The reason, they think, is the breakdown of communication barriers across geographical boundaries arising from the wide use of Internet technologies.

Let us support our brothers and sisters who are actively involved in the making of our CBL.  For more information about the scheduled convention next month, please contact Bros Pons Gordovez, Jun Flores, Doms Tunque, Tony Gomez or Jojo Agtane.

The planning of the APhiO-Theta-sponsored Undergraduate Scholarship Program in UPLB takes a giant step as Bro Vic Cadiz presents the documents that could serve as the benchmarks by which our program could be modelled after.  This scholarship program could serve as the centerpiece of our service to the university, one of the Fraternity's and Sorority's four fields of service. Bro Homer Pantua and Sisters Malou Cabrido-Maldonado and Marlea Munez join Bro Vic in the program planning group.  Let us all extend our strong support to the four as they lead us towards the sponsorship of a noble undertaking such as this scholarship program.

  • PC-Para-sa-Theta II Kicks Off 1/15/2002

  • Theta must be in 21st APO-Philippines Biennial Convention! 5/14/2001

The registration fee is PhP1,000.00 per delegate exclusive of food and transportation fare. Bro Gudoy already assumed responsibility in mobilizing resources to provide the delegate resident brothers and sisters with the needed financial support. Bro Gudoy will just bill us later for our own contributions.  We have to make sure that our chapter is fully represented and that our delegates get what they need.
  • San Diego, CA ... probable site of APO-Theta, North America, reunion in 2002 5/14/2001

The suggestion of Sis Boots Mitra-Donatoni to hold the reunion of APO-Theta alumni in North America seems to be gaining tremendous support.  San Diego is in the state of California where most of the APO-Theta alumni in North America are settled.  The reunion is suggested to concide with the APO convention in the same city during the Labor Day weekend which usually falls in the first week of September.  There must be a program of activities for the APO-Theta reunion so that attendees would have certain itineraries and would know when to arrive and when to depart.  It follows that Sis Boots volunteers herself to assume a major role in the reunion's organizing team.

  • APO-Theta Roster ... coming very soon! 5/13/2001
